Women's Bail Fund

The Women’s Bail Fund (WBF) was an organization based in New York City. They bailed women out of the Women's House of Detention at Greenwich Village and later, at Riker's Island. They also attended court hearings and assisted women with finding lawyers as well as other legal aid. Additional practices involved getting bail reduction hearings for women inside, planning actions and educating groups on prison conditions, engaging in prisoner correspondence, investigating cases of brutality against women prisoners, and supporting all demands and struggles of prisoners. Their work emphasized the systemic oppression of primarily black, brown, and third world peoples through imprisonment.

This collection contains a number of organizing documents including meeting minutes, notes reflecting criticism-self-criticism practices to address internal contradictions, and various WBF publications and outreach materials.
